Course Description:

This two-day workshop offers mentorship in the systematic and data-driven process informing clinical reasoning when applying the Ayres Sensory Integrative® approach during evaluation and intervention with clients to therapists certified in Ayres Sensory Integration®.

Participants will analyse existing clinical reasoning models focused on the Ayres Sensory Integration® theory and frame of reference, interpret assessment findings to identify patterns of sensory integration abilities and challenges, create precision intervention plans, evaluate the fidelity elements of ASI intervention used during delivery, and elucidate the mechanisms and avenues toward needed and desired outcomes for the client, using this evidence-based intervention.  Learning will take place through guided discussions using participant case examples.

Contact Hours – 12 (1.2 CUEs)        Educational Level – Intermediate to Advanced

Who Should Attend:

Occupational therapists previously trained or certified in Sensory Integration including the SIPT or EASI and who are interested in advancing their clinical reasoning skills using these measures.

Course Requirements:

  • Attendees are required to prepare one case study for analysis during the workshop.  Additional cases will be discussed based on time available during the course

  • Upon completion of this program, participations are required to complete and return the course/instructor evaluation form

Aims:

  • Apply a systematic, evidence-based process for applying a sensory integrative approach within professional therapy.

  • Through analysis of structured and unstructured assessment data, determine the strengths and challenges experienced by the clients relative to their occupational performance difficulties.

  • Create and implement strategic intervention plans from assessment data using evidence-based practice models of Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI).

  • Discuss the hypothesised mechanisms of change relative to the intervention plan

  • Analyse intervention using Ayres Sensory Integration® for adherence to the principles defined by the ASI Fidelity Measure

  • Design therapeutic activities that can be used in the clinic and community

Synopsis:

Occupational Therapy using manualised and evidence-based Ayres Sensory Integration® assessment and intervention is a postgraduate specialisation that requires advanced clinical reasoning skills.

This workshop will provide case-based opportunities for mentorship in clinical reasoning and data-driven decision-making, using a variety of assessment data to guide the implementation of precision interventions aimed at facilitating adaptive responses.

Case analyses will involve group participation in formulating hypotheses from observations, then testing these hypotheses with additional assessment data to identify each child’s strengths and weaknesses.

Intervention plans will be developed for each child, including the setting, duration, and expected outcomes. The process will link referring problems and the activities used during intervention with both proximal and distal goals. The workshop will also explore how to explain these interventions to parents and significant others, including strategies for report writing.

The content will highlight how dynamic assessment contributes to the facilitation of adaptive responses in children. Outcomes linked to families and communities will also be discussed.
